Neymar attacks Barcelona board following home PSG debut: 'There are directors that shouldn't be there

Neymar has criticised the Barcelona board of directors after scoring on his home PSG debut following his world record move.

The Brazilian left the Nou Camp in a shock £198million move earlier this month, despite signing a contract extension last year and the best efforts of the club and his team mates.

Now he has said Barca will not be competitive on the European stage unless changes are made at the top, and said the current situation makes him sad.

Coutinho: Liverpool refusing to sell is damaging – Jermaine Jenas

Coutinho after scoring for Liverpool
Liverpool are damaging themselves by refusing to let midfielder Philippe Coutinho leave for Barcelona, says ex-England international Jermaine Jenas.

The Reds have rejected three bids – the latest worth about £114m – from the Spanish giants for Coutinho, who last week submitted a transfer request after the club’s owners released a statement insisting he would not be sold.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live’s Friday Football Social, Jenas said Liverpool’s stance was like “cutting off your nose to spite your own face”.

He added: “Coutinho has done brilliantly for Liverpool. Yes, they have helped develop him, but the fact is that now the deal of a lifetime has presented itself – not just for him but for the club.

“Once the owners started to get involved, though, it became about power. It’s one thing it coming from the manger’s mouth – there being a feeling that he shouldn’t be sold – but now they are in a situation that sets a precedent for future deals.”

Barcelona have moved for 25-year-old Coutinho – who signed from Inter Milan for £8.5m in 2013 – after selling Brazil team-mate Neymar to Paris St-Germain for a world record transfer fee of £200m.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have made two acquisitions this summer. Egypt and former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah arrived from Roma for £34m in June, before the club paid Hull City £10m for Scotland left-back Andrew Robertson last month.

“The timing is a problem,” added ex-Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder Jenas, 34.

“Barca have got themselves into this situation by selling Neymar when they did, and Liverpool have struggled to make the signings they wanted.

“If Coutinho goes now, they know they will be in an even harder position – because they failed with bids for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and there didn’t seem to be a ‘Plan B’.

“But what’s also weird about this situation, and another reason why Coutinho probably feels hard done by, is that Liverpool have sold star players in the past – like with Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.

“We had something similar with Dimitar Berbatov when he left Spurs for Manchester United in 2008.

“If a player deserves to move on to bigger things, like Barcelona, it should almost be like: ‘Thank you for everything, you’ve done brilliantly, now on your way.'”

Barca ‘close’ to signing Coutinho, Dembele

Barcelona General Manager, Pep Segura, has said the signings of Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele are “close” after watching his side lose to arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final.

Liverpool have remained adamant that Brazilian playmaker Coutinho – who has submitted a transfer request – will not be sold in this transfer window while Borussia Dortmund suspended Dembele after the forward failed to show for training amid links with Barcelona.

However, Segura expressed confidence deals for both players could be done before the transfer window closes.

“We are close to Coutinho and Dembele,” he said. “We are discussing their deals but do not know when it will be done.”

Asked if he expected them to sign, he added: “Yes, we expect it.”

Reports in Spain on Wednesday suggested Barca had agreed a fee with Dortmund for French winger Dembele.

Barca are looking to replace Neymar following his shock world record transfer to Paris St Germain, and their need for reinforcements was apparent as they lost 2-0 to Madrid on Wednesday night, completing a 5-1 aggregate loss to the Spanish and European champions

LaLiga: Sergio Ramos sent off again as Real, Barcelona win

Sergio Ramos was sent off for the 19th time in the Spanish LaLiga on Sunday night.

The Real Madrid captain was sent off for a second yellow card in the 90th minute of the match against Deportivo La Coruna.

Before the red card, Real had scored three goals, by Gareth Bale, Casemiro and Toni Kroos; while Deportivo missed a penalty.

Cristiano Ronaldo was not listed as he continues to serve the suspension he got in the Spanish Super Cup.

Earlier, Barcelona defeated Real Betis 2-0.

Neymar scores twice as PSG runs riots with goals

Neymar scored twice on his home debut as Paris St-Germain netted four of their six goals with only 10 men to thrash Toulouse and go top of Ligue 1.

Max Gradel volleyed home before £200m world record signing Neymar equalised.

Adrien Rabiot fired in and Edinson Cavani made it 3-1 from the spot moments after Marco Verratti saw red.

Christopher Jullien’s header made it 3-2, but stunning strikes from Javier Pastore and Layvin Kurzawa settled matters before Neymar’s late effort.

The result moved PSG to the top of the table on goal difference, with Monaco and Saint-Etienne also maintaining their 100% winning records this weekend, BBC Sports reports.

It was a fantastic display by last season’s runners-up, who will be expected to regain the French title and challenge strongly in Europe having paid Barcelona the huge fee for Brazil forward Neymar.

They were stunned early on when midfielder Gradel – on loan from Bournemouth – produced a sublime volley from a corner to put the visitors ahead.

Neymar, who twice threatened earlier, equalised in the 31st minute with a simple finish after Rabiot’s low strike was parried into his path.

The 22-year-old France midfielder’s wonderful, low, angled strike put PSG into the lead, but their hopes of a third successive win were hit when Verratti was shown a second yellow for a late tackle on Toulouse captain Jullien.

However, PSG did not take their foot off the pedal and scored their third when Uruguay striker Cavani converted a penalty given for Andy Delort’s foul on Neymar.

Jullien’s header reduced the deficit, but only for four minutes before substitute Pastore’s superb strike and full-back Kurzawa’s spectacular scissor-kick from Neymar’s corner all but sealed victory.

And in stoppage time, Neymar grabbed their last when he showboated past the Toulouse defence and fired in low past the unfortunate Alban Lafont.

Transfer News LIVE updates: Van Dijk to Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal latest gossip

Transfer News LIVE: All the latest gossip, rumours and every done deal as Philippe Coutinho continues to push for a move to Barcelona.

8:30am: Chelsea are reportedly plotting a raid on Tottenham for England international Danny Rose.

The 27-year-old voiced concerns in an interview with The Sun last week about Spurs' lack of transfer action.

And the same newspaper now claim Antonio Conte wants to get him on-board for Chelsea's Premier League title defence.

The Blues take on Tottenham at Wembley this Sunday, hoping to bounce back from last weekend's shock defeat to Burnley.

And The Sun reckon they could lodge a £50m bid for Rose hours after the full-time whistle goes in an attempt to bolster their defence.

7:40am: Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho is so desperate to join Barcelona that he’s prepared to jeopardise his international career.

That’s according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, who claim the 25-year-old has told Jurgen Klopp he does not intend to play for the Reds in future.

Coutinho has been the subject of two bids worth £72m and £90m from Barcelona this summer, both of which were rejected.

But he wants to sign for the La Liga giants and is willing to never pull on the Liverpool shirt again to ensure they’ll sell him.

That situation could see Coutinho left out of Brazil’s squad for next year’s World Cup - a risk he’s apparently willing to take.

7:10am: Chelsea gaffer Antonio Conte still wants to sign Andrea Belotti from Torino this summer.

The Italian brought Alvaro Morata to England as Diego Costa's replacement last month in a deal worth £70m.

But Starsport understands he remains unconvinced by Michy Batshuayi and is keen to snare an alternative.

Conte's first-choice is Belotti, who smashed in 26 goals in 35 appearances for Torino last season.

However, the Serie A side are demanding a whopping £80m to let him leave before the transfer window shuts.

Barcelona are still strongly pursuing Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho
6:30am: Manchester United could still get their hands on Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale.

That's according to beIN Sports journalist Richard Keys, who claims a deal is possible until the end of the transfer window.

Bale has been heavily linked with United this summer with Real keen to generate funds to sign Kyiian Mbappe from Monaco.

And Keys reckons Jose Mourinho could snare the 28-year-old - despite the United boss suggesting he was unavailable.

On Twitter, a fan asked Keys: "Hi Richard, still think there is legs in the Bale to United deal?"

And he replied: "Until the window shuts I do."

5:40am: Atletico Madrid are wary of getting involved in Diego Costa's row with Chelsea, despite wanting to re-sign the striker.

According to the Daily Mail, Diego Simeone's side are prepared to pay £40million for Costa this month.

The Chelsea goalscorer would not be able to play for Atletico until mid-season, although he is currently AWOL anyway.

Costa is in exile and refusing to train with the Under-23s, opting to stay with his family in Brazil for now instead.

Costa has provided an account of his story recently, and it has led to an ugly row between player and club.

As a result, Atletico are reluctant to get involved so they don't damage their relationship with Chelsea.

5:10am: Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is torn over how the club should approach the Philippe Coutinho situation.
Barcelona are strongly pursuing the Brazilian playmaker and Gerrard acknowledges it would be a risk to keep Coutinho against his will.

"It is very very difficult, especially for the owners of Liverpool football club who are going to be under big, big pressure from our supporters at Liverpool to keep hold of Coutinho," Gerrard told BT Sport.

When asked if it's worth keeping a disgruntled player anyway, Gerrard replied: "Yes and No.

"You'd like to think that Philippe's professional enough, once the transfer window's out the way, to pick himself up and be professional enough to get on with it.

Chelsea want the signing of Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic

- Antonio Conte has told Chelsea to sign Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic

- The Blues' manager wants him to be part of his plans this season

- Manchester United are also interested in signing the Croatian international

After starting the defense of their Premier League title on a disastrous note, Chelsea are now weighing up a mega million bid to sign Inter Milan midfielder Ivan Perisic.

According to the report, the Blues are ready to meet the demand of the Italian club before the close of the ongoing transfer window.

But Chelsea will have to face serious competition from their Premier League rivals Manchester United who are also reportedly interested in their services of the Croatian international.

Perisic is rated at £48 million and Jose Mourinho wants the Red Devils to sign him as the Portuguese tactician wants him to be part of his plans this term.

Antonio Conte is currently in a devastated mood following his side's defeat at home against Burnley in their first match of the season.

Ronaldo is f****d after ref push

Cristiano Ronaldo is "f****d" following his referee push, admits Real Madrid team-mate Marcelo.

The Portuguese superstar caused controversy on Sunday during a Spanish Super Cup clash with Barcelona.

After finding the target and removing his shirt to mimic Lionel Messi’s famous celebration from a Clasico clash back in April, Ronaldo was shown a yellow card.

Minutes later he saw red following an alleged dive, leading the frustrated 32-year-old to shove the match official and leave himself facing a possible 12-game ban.

Pressed for his take on the incident after a 3-1 win for Real, Brazilian full-back Marcelo told reporters: “He's f****d.

Ronaldo deserves long ban for ref push

“It’s a pity. What are we going to do?

“I haven't talked about referees for a long time, but what has happened has happened. I have just been asked about it but I have not seen it so I cannot comment.”

Football fans troll Chelsea following their 2-3 defeat to Burnley

Reigning Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday, August 12, 2017 began their title defence on a disastrous note after losing 2-3 to Burnley in-front of their faithfuls.

The Blues finished the game against the Clarets with 9 men as captain Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas were sent off after committing foul.

Neymar braced for French culture on PSG debut

After dazzling Rio's imposing Maracana and Barcelona's storied Camp Nou, the world's most expensive footballer Neymar will be welcomed to French football on Sunday at Guingamp's humble 17,000-capacity Stade du Rouduorou in sleepy Brittany.

With the mundanity of transfer paperwork finally resolved, the 25-year-old Brazilian magician will line up for Paris Saint-Germain for the first time since his mind-boggling 222 million euro ($261 million) move from Barcelona.

"He's physically ready to play the whole ninety minutes," PSG coach Unai Emery told AFP.

"He's been working well and we looked hard at tactics and free-kicks. We all want him in the starting 11, he's a player we need in the group."

Even Guingamp coach Antoine Kombouare, himself a former PSG boss, wants Neymar to play despite the potential havoc he could wreak on the home defence.

"I want the fans to come on Sunday to see Guingamp win... preferably against a side with Neymar in it," he said.

It will be a major culture shock for Neymar in a town which has a population of just 7,000 and is best known for its annual Breton dance showcase, the Saint Loup Festival.

However, that's not to say that Guingamp do not have football pedigree -- former Chelsea and Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba spent a season at the club in 2002/2003.

They were French Cup winners in 2009 and 2014, and last season beat PSG 2-1 in the corresponding league fixture.

"We could have filled a stadium of 40,000 seats with no problem at all," said Guingamp president Bertrand Desplat, whose club budget is an eighth of what PSG paid for Neymar.

Journalists from far and wide are expected for the game -- the ground's press tribune, built to hold 80 people, has been extended to cater for 350.

A total of 145 stewards will be on duty at the ground -- 30 more than usual.

Neymar will simply be glad to put his tax troubles behind him and get back to doing what he does best after his lawyer revealed on Saturday that the Brazilian superstar has agreed to pay a $2.5 million fine for tax evasion in his homeland.

His 2013 transfer to Barca from Sau Paulo's Santos is also the subject of a Spanish tax fraud investigation.

- 1,200km away, Barca start new era -

Meanwhile, French media speculated over who in the expensively-assembled PSG team will make way for Neymar.

Le Parisien suggested it will be Javier Pastore, the Argentine star who was the first major signing after PSG were bought by their ambitious Qatari owners.

"After first giving up his No.10 shirt, will he (Pastore) now give him (Neymar) his place in the team?" Le Parisien asked of the player who took up the No.10 shirt after Zlatan Ibrahimovic left for Manchester United last season, only to hand it to the Brazilian this summer.

"Neymar will start on the left at the expense of Pastore."

Sports daily L'Equipe saw things differently, though.

"A trio of Neymar, Pastore and Angel di Maria will support (striker) Ederson Cavani," predicted L'Equipe.

The match in Guingamp kicks-off at 1900GMT.

An hour later, and around 1,200km further south, Barcelona will start their first competitive match without Neymar by facing bitter rivals Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

Barca's scattergun approach to finding a replacement for Neymar has so far been unsuccessful with bids for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele of Borussia Dortmund rebuffed.

Gerard Deulofeu was handed Neymar's role alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez up front in Monday's 5-0 friendly win over Chapecoense on his return to the club after spells at Everton and AC Milan.

And while he's not a like-for-like replacement, Spanish press claim former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho, a Brazil international, is on the verge of a 40-million-euro move to Barca from China's Guangzhou Evergrande.

Us fighter pilot ejects on emergency landing on Bahrain

A US military aircraft made an emergency landing at Bahrain International Airport on Saturday and its pilot ejected on the runway after an engine malfunction, a navy spokesman said.

The F/A 18E fighter "experienced an engine malfunction and attempted to divert to Sheik(h) Isa Air Base, Bahrain", said Commander William Urban of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain.

"Unable to make it to Isa, the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at Bahrain International Airport. Due to the malfunction, the aircraft could not be stopped on the runway and the pilot ejected from the aircraft as it departed the runway."

The pilot was unharmed and investigations are under way. The Fifth Fleet said it was "supporting efforts to re-open the runway".

Most flight arrivals on Saturday afternoon were listed as delayed on Manama airport's official website.

Bahrain's state-run BNA news agency reported that the runway closed to all flights for two hours on Saturday afternoon.

An archipelago located between Saudi Arabia and rival regional powerhouse Iran, Bahrain is also home to a British military base that is still under construction.

Isa Air Base is central to US operations against the Islamic State jihadist group in the region.

Bahrain has been ruled for more than 200 years by the Sunni Al-Khalifa dynasty. The kingdom has been gripped by unrest since 2011, when the country's majority Shiite population took to the streets to demand an elected government.

The Gulf state is also in a newly formed alliance, led by Saudi Arabia, that cut ties with Qatar in June over allegations Doha supported Islamist extremist groups and had close ties to Iran.

Qatar, which itself is home to the largest US air base in the Gulf, has denied the charges.

Merkel rejects electric car quota pushed by German election rival

DORTMUND, Germany (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel kicked off her re-election campaign on Saturday with a stinging attack on German auto executives, pressing them to innovate to secure jobs, and win back trust lost by a diesel emissions scandal.

Merkel is far ahead of her rivals in opinion polls but, wary of complacency setting in among her supporters, she plans 50 rallies in towns and cities across Germany in the run-up to the Sept. 24 election, when she will seek a fourth term in office.

With her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) campaigning on a platform of economic stability, Merkel ripped into auto industry executives for destroying trust in the sector - Germany's biggest exporter and provider of some 800,000 jobs.

"Large sections of the auto industry have gambled away unbelievable amounts of trust," she told a rally in Dortmund, in the heart of the Ruhr area that was at the centre of Germany's post-war 'economic miracle' but which is now a rust-belt.

"This is trust that only the auto industry can restore. And when I say 'the industry' that is the company leaders," she added, to loud applause, pressing executives to behave honestly.

By turning on auto industry executives, Merkel is trying to both push the sector to innovate and to head off a drive for more social justice in Germany from her main challenger, Martin Schulz of the left-leaning Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Germany has enjoyed solid growth since Merkel took office in November 2005, and unemployment has fallen to record lows. Yet many people earn low wages and feel left behind in a globalized economy that has seen the gap grow between rich and poor.

That sense of injustice and economic angst has been fuelled by Volkswagen admitting almost two years ago to cheating U.S. diesel emissions tests, a confession that plunged Germany's auto sector into crisis.

Earlier this month, German politicians and car bosses agreed to overhaul engine software on 5.3 million diesel cars to cut pollution and try to repair the industry's battered reputation.

But many politicians fear Germany's carmakers are failing to invest enough in new technology and infrastructure.

Wading into the debate, a Greens party state premier defended the diesel technology at the centre of Germany's car industry crisis, saying it was a necessary interim solution on the way to electric cars.

Winfried Kretschmann, premier of Baden-Wuerttemberg - home to Mercedes-maker Daimler, Porsche and Robert Bosch [ROBG.UL] - said diesel was a clean technology that helped reduce the carbon-dioxide emissions blamed for global warming.

"We must cut pollution, we must fight climate change - for which we need clean diesel ... and we must secure the car industry in Germany, especially in Baden-Wuerttemberg," Kretschmann told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

E-CAR QUOTAS

Merkel rejected a proposal made by Schulz to introduce quotas for electric cars in Europe.

"I don't think that the quota for E-cars - for this technology - has been well thought out," she said at the rally of her CDU and its employers' arm.

"Then we would negotiate for ages in Europe. What would we do if it is not adhered to?" she added of the quota.

Instead, Merkel called for a bigger picture strategy for helping the auto industry make the transition to producing electric cars.

"We need to innovate quickly," she said. "Where companies can't manage it alone, the government must stand behind them and shove things along."

Merkel's government has come under mounting pressure for not doing enough to crack down on vehicle pollution and for being too close to powerful carmakers. She has repeatedly warned against "demonising" diesel engines.

"We need diesel cars, we need petrol cars, but we also need to make the transition faster to new technologies," she said.

Her conservatives have promised tax cuts worth some 15 billion euros ($17.72 billion) annually as well as increased spending on infrastructure, defence and security.

Watford hold shaky Liverpool to thrilling 3-3 draw

Aug 12 (Reuters) - WATFORD 3 LIVERPOOL 3

Liverpool showed familiar defensive weaknesses after conceding a trio of soft goals including a stoppage-time equaliser in an absorbing 3-3 Premier League draw at Watford on Saturday.

Defender Miguel Britos bundled the ball home at the death after Liverpool had come from 1-0 and 2-1 down to lead 3-2 thanks to a three-minute blitz in the second half, when new signing Mohamed Salah made an impact.

Former Chelsea winger Salah, who joined Liverpool from AS Roma during the close season, won a penalty converted by Roberto Firmino in the 55th minute and then bundled in the Brazilian's lofted pass from close range.

But the visitors were punished for sloppy defending and missing a string of chances as Britos popped up at the near post to delight the home fans at Vicarage Road, leaving Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp blaming the officials and bad luck.

"The equaliser was offside. It’s obvious because the linesman is on the line. He needs to see it," said Klopp.

"The first half I wasn’t too happy with. We passed but we couldn’t see what we actually wanted. The second half was a lot better but we forgot to close the game."

Having declared that the club's want-away Brazil forward Philippe Coutinho is not for sale, Klopp may need to strengthen his back four who looked completely at sea almost every time the home side came forward.

Liverpool fell behind in the eighth minute after striker Stefano Okaka was left completely unmarked at the near post to head in a Jose Holebas corner.

Sadio Mane drew the visitors level with a classy equaliser, having started and finished a slick move which involved a double exchange of passes with Alberto Moreno and a deft touch by Emre Can.

Yet Liverpool were hit by another sucker punch just three minutes later, as they failed to clear a low cross by Tom Cleverley which left midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure with a simple tap-in.

Liverpool appeared to be heading for victory after Firmino sent Watford keeper Heurelho Gomez the wrong way with his spot-kick and then chipped the ball into Salah's stride to put the visitors 3-2 ahead.

Yet they missed several good chances to put the game beyond Watford's reach and paid the price when a poorly delivered corner from the right caught them napping and Britos poked in the equaliser after a goal-mouth melee.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher criticised the club's defensive system and pointed the finger at their German coach.

"It’s the set up from the manager," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"They concede the most goals out of anyone in the top six. Nothing has changed."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expressed "relief" over Olivier Giroud's decision to stay after the France striker earned his side a breathless 4-3 win against Leicester City.

Giroud came off the bench with Arsenal trailing 3-2 in Friday's Premier League curtain-raiser at the Emirates Stadium and after fellow substitute Aaron Ramsey equalised, he headed in an 85th-minute winner.

Alexandre Lacazette's arrival has bumped Giroud even further down the Arsenal pecking order, but having given the 30-year-old the chance to leave, Wenger was thrilled he decided to stay.

"It's fantastic. I opened the door for him at some stage because I know it's important for him to play, but I don't want to him to go," Wenger told reporters.

"He decided to stay and it was one of the great days of recent weeks for me. He's a fantastic player, but as well he has a big weight in this squad. It was a relief for me he decided to stay."

Giroud outmuscled Harry Maguire to meet Granit Xhaka's corner with a strong header that hit the bar and bounced behind the line before Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel could club it away.

An admiring Wenger said Giroud was "in his prime" and "at the top of his game

Pogba can be one of premier league best player

Paul Pogba can be “one of the best players” in the Premier League this season by adding more goals and leadership to his game at Manchester United, says Quinton Fortune.

Big things were expected of the Frenchman following his return to Old Trafford last summer in an £89 million deal.

He was able to help United to three trophies, but the general consensus is that there is more to come from the midfielder.

Fortune believes that potential will be unlocked in 2017-18, with Pogba capable of inspiring a title bid from Jose Mourinho’s men.

The former Red Devils star told the club’s official website: "Pogba has been fantastic now he's had a pre-season under his belt.

Chinese company denies Man Utd approach

"Pogba stands out for me but it's a team performance.

"Of course he can be one of the best players in the league this season. I am sure this is one of his own objectives and goals he has set himself. I'm just happy he's settled now and has had a season back here, plus pre-season, which is very important.

"Paul looks very strong and very calm. He is not trying to prove to the whole world his ability as we've known that now for some time. This season, hopefully he'll score loads of goals and it's about him taking that leadership role.

"The manager has made him his captain a few times and it's good for him. He has got to take responsibility and I am sure he relishes that. He has got to help the side as the most important objective is for the team.

"I hope the team agree that objective is to win the Premier League. We have definitely got the team to do that."

Rooney: CR7 would break my record!

United could only muster a sixth-place finish in 2016-17, with much of their attention focused on cup competition – as they tasted Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League success.

They are expected to mount a serious challenge for Premier League supremacy this season, though, with Mourinho boasting a proven record when it comes to delivering title glory in his second year in any particular post

How to volunteer to advance your career

Everyone could use a little career boost, and volunteering can help give you just that. If you're just starting out, volunteering can help you gain experience, but even if you're established in your career, volunteering can still benefit you. You can gain new skills that will help you advance your career. Start by finding the perfect place to volunteer.

Part One of Three:
Finding the Right Match
Edit

1
Pick a cause you care about. Even if you're volunteering to enhance your career, you should still pick a place that supports a cause you're passionate about. You're much more likely to enjoy the work if you believe in what they're doing.
For example, if you love pets, volunteer at a local shelter. If you're an avid reader, volunteer at your local library. Pick something you love and care about.

2
Find time to visit the volunteer organization. Usually, the nonprofit will want to meet with you. Be serious, and treat it like an interview. It's also a great time to see the building and meet people. Ask for a tour while you're there, so you can see what goes on behind the scenes. You may find that you love it, or you might decide that it's not the right place for you.[1]

3
Choose an opportunity that matches your skill set. Anyone can hand out fliers or serve food, but only you have your specific skill set and experience. Try to find a place where you can put that to good use, as that will help you gain experience and grow your skill set.[2]
For instance, if you are into graphic design, volunteer to help an organization redesign its website and informational materials.

4
Pick a position that will grow skills beneficial to your career path. Even if you can't find a volunteer position that perfectly matches your career path, you can still pick something that will grow useful skills. For instance, if you're going into or already are in business, learning how to manage people is important. Pick a position that will enable you to eventually work on management skills.[3]

5
Narrow down your choices. If you don't know where to begin, think about causes you've supported in the past, and see if those organizations need help. You can also ask friends and family for recommendations. Another option is using a volunteer search engine that will match you with appropriate organizations in your area.[4]

Part Two of Three:
Gaining Experience and Skills
Edit

1
Ask plenty of questions along the way. Actively gain knowledge from other people you're working with by asking questions and asking for help. Also, pay attention to what they're doing and how they're doing it, so you can do it yourself in the future.[5]
If you're fresh out of school, you likely don't have the experience you need to get a job. Volunteering can be a great way to get that experience, as long as you pick something that helps grow similar skills.

2
Take on projects slightly out of your comfort zone. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills. If you take on new projects, you can learn new things along the way. Once you've found an organization that can use your experience, plug in. The great thing about learning new skills is it can benefit you no matter what level you're at, whether you're just starting out in your career or are well established.[6]

3
Network as you volunteer. Networking is just meeting people and connecting with them. So while you're volunteering, spend some time getting to know both the people you're working with and the people you're serving. You never know when a connection could lead to a job or a career advancement.[7]
Develop connections as you make them. For instance, when you're getting to know someone, ask if they want to have a drink or get dinner sometime.

Part Three of Three:
Using What You've Learned
Edit

1
Talk about volunteering around your boss and colleagues. If you've gained new skills through volunteering, don't hide them under a bushel. You don't have to brag about them, but you can bring them up in casua
